Super 8 review

If ET and and Jurassic Park are two of your favorite films, then you are sure to enjoy Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi film, Super 8. The 2011 film sees starlets Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning, uncovering the mysterious events after what occurred that fateful night they vowed never to tell anyone about. Super 8 is a play on words, it is used to describe the type of film the children use in their low budget film, but it could also be giving the impression they are a group of superheroes in themselves, defeating death in dangerous circumstances and saving people’s lives.

If you love to know as much as possible about a film before seeing it, then it’s worth watching some trailers or listening to the soundtrack online. The slow orchestral score, heard during calm moments of the film, makes perfect background music if you are relaxing at home, are online playing Foxy Bingo or reading Super 8 reviews. Equally, there are some amazing and dramatic pieces which accompany the explosion and action packed scenes perfectly.

The film – based in 1978 – sees a group of friends work together to produce a low budget zombie movie. The young teens sneak out of their house at midnight to get the perfect shot of a train passing through an old station. However, one boy, Joe, sees a truck driving along the tracks towards a fast approaching train. As they collide, a huge explosion occurs and strange buzzing cubes are left around the destroyed site. It is up to the group of children to discover what exactly happened, solve the mystery behind the strange phenomena in the town and uncover the reason behind missing metallic objects.

Despite its 12 rating, the film has several tense and jumpy parts to it. Tension is built through many scenes, most with no outcome, but the atmosphere makes you think something is about to occur. There is also a rather large amount of swearing from the teenagers, aged around 14. However, it is done in a comical way. One small and weedy character has a strange obsession with firecrackers which annoys the group throughout the whole film, but ends up proving very useful to use against the monster.

In addition, we do not see the creature until the last third of the film, which adds even more mystery,. The audience doesn’t know if it is a alien, a dinosaur or something else out of this world.
